Hi, I'm Dai. I make books.

I also design posters and advertisements, make digital games accessible to the visually impaired, manage crowdfunding projects, create brand identities and marketing plans, and very occassionally write things.

The Monster Overhaul
Cairn 2e Boxed Set

Game Box Set
Published by Space Penguin Ink
2024

Cairn is a indie tabletop RPG by Yochai Gal that was initially released for free in 2020, and that first edition of the game remains free to this day. In 2024, Yochai and Space Penguin Ink got together with plans to create a special commemorative boxed set for the new second edition, which includes new books, a GM screen, and a whole bunch of goodies. As head of and sole member of SPI’s marketing team, the honor fell to me to figure out how best to sell it.

The main struggle of any crowdfunding endeavor is this: how do you get people to pay money now for something they won’t get until later? You can lean on licensed IPs and reputable brand names, which works if you’ve got the cash. You can keep your promises small and your products modest, which is a great way if you’re just starting out and aren’t entirely sure yourself if you’ve got what it takes. Or you can take a big swing with a well-designed page and a lot of community engagement and hope for the best. That’s what we did, and a scant year after Space Penguin Ink opened its doors with me as its marketer and social media manager, the Cairn 2e Boxed Set Kickstarter campaigned closed with $226,975 against a $30,000 goal. Money in the bank.
