It’s an odd statement, but the genre diversity of independent RPGs can be pretty evenly split into the pre- and post-MOTHERSHIP eras. The pre-MOTHERSHIP days were overwhelmingly dominated by fantasy games, with a few sci-fi and horror games on the fringes, but none took off or proved to have such staying power as this one. I was there for the initial release, back when the game was just a small Player’s (Survival) Guide and a single adventure, and I’ve had the pleasure of following its growth from humble origins to earning over one million dollars with a grand boxed set Kickstarter. 

I initially approached creator Sean McCoy about making the game more accessible in 2021, before the six books were collected and branded the official 1st edition (indeed, before some of the books were even written). The issue was one of timing — the books were in various states of completion and preparation for release, and Tuesday Knight Games was still working out just what to do with this unexpected hit. 

In late 2023, I got the go-ahead for the biggest project of my career. Eight books, over 350 pages total, designed and built upon over nearly half a decade. Cracking open the files revealed a murderer’s row of accessibility no-no’s: rasterized display text, text baked into background images, text color as hierarchy, and complex maps were just a few of them, and each compounded by Sean’s frankly-ludicrous ability to cram as much information as possible into each and every page. 

I cleared my schedule. I made a kanban board. And just a few days before deadline, I delivered the six books, packaged and fully remediated, to the 15,699 backers of the boxed set.
