Hi, I'm Dai. I make books.

I also design posters and advertisements, make digital games accessible to the visually impaired, manage crowdfunding projects, create brand identities and marketing plans, and very occassionally write things.

The Monster Overhaul
Eat the Reich

Unorthodox softcover, 72pp
Published by Rowan, Rook and Decard
2023

I first discovered Rowan, Rook, and Decard when I backed their game Spire on Kickstarter in 2017. In 2023, they launched a crowdfunding campaign for their newest book, Eat the Reich, an alternate history game about vampire commandos seeking to exsanguinate Adolf Hitler the hard way. I’m always down for new and interesting ways to stick it to Der Führer,  and the art and design by Will Kirkby was a big draw, so I humbly pitched my accessibility services, and they were more than receptive.

At this point in my career, I was doing almost all of my PDF remediation work within InDesign. This has numerous advantages to doing it “in post” via Acrobat, the primary one being that the metadata is set within the layout file itself, and will automatically apply to all exports from that file henceforth. This allows for changes to be made to the document, like fixing typos or altering the placement of items, without necessitating the entire work be done again to make it accessible.

The biggest challenge with this book was in the character sheets, which make heavy use of check boxes to indicate uses of particular talents or weapons. Each of these check boxes required their own alt text, and had to be threaded together so that they could be read both individually and within the context of each other. Furthermore, the bombastic colors and design of the book, while visually stunning, were often insufficient in the contrast department for an accessible document. This was solved by the creation of a seperate, black-and-white version of the document without any of the background art.
