Hi, I'm Dai. I make books.

I also design posters and advertisements, make digital games accessible to the visually impaired, manage crowdfunding projects, create brand identities and marketing plans, and very occassionally write things.

The Monster Overhaul
Gangs of Titan City

Trade hardcover, 248pp
Published by Soul Muppet Publishing
2022

I don’t get to do a lot of cyberpunk, despite the fact that it’s solidly one of the top genres represented in tabletop games. Gangs of Titan City is, as its name may indicate, just one of those games where the world is scrappy and degenerate and you get to play as a bunch of scrappy degenerates.

Information density was the order of the day here, and I had a lot of fun playing around with a modular grid to produce pages that fit the needs of the type whle being visually cohesive with each other. With few exceptions for display type, almost every word in the book is set in one style of another of Bebas Neue, a fantastic typeface if you’re wanting something striking yet impersonal.

The black-and-white art of Ben Brown was paired with a design that puts an emphasis on white space and heavy black lines to seperate sections. Sidebars were done in reverse type to further differentiate them, and in flipping through the book they really stand out.

The book was produced with three different covers, two full-color art versions and a silver-foil embossed version of my own design. The last was unique to the Kickstarter, and would be matched by a similar design for SoulMuppet’s next book, Throne of Avarice. I don’t know much about firearms, and after the design was revealed several backers pointed out the resemblance to a certain real-life pistol, a resemblance which I maintain was entirely unintentional. Not my fault it looks like a future gun.
