Hi, I'm Dai. I make books.

I also design posters and advertisements, make digital games accessible to the visually impaired, manage crowdfunding projects, create brand identities and marketing plans, and very occassionally write things.

The Monster Overhaul
Libreté: a Game of Lost Children & Fleur Du Mall
A5 softcover, 164pp and 22pp
ISBN 978-1-735-60564-7
2020

GMDK’s second and third published books were English translations of the popular French game Libreté and its first supplement, Fleur Du Mall. Written by Vivi Féasson, Libreté first saw publication in 2016 via the crowdfunding platform Ulule. A quickstart was translated by its creator into English, which is how I first heard of the game, and I was immediately struck by its somber tone and unique premise. After reaching out to Vivi in 2019, we began working together to bring the game to an English-speaking audience.

After an inital failed Kickstarter campaign in September 2019, Vivi and I decided to rethink our launch plan and successfully re-launched the campaign in January 2020, ultimately bringing in $14,000 of our $7,500 goal.

Translation was handled by Vivi, with editing by Fiona Geist and Jarrett Crader and illustrations by GMDK alumni Lauren Bryce. To commemorate the new edition, it was decided that the English version would have an entirely new visual design. To match the mid-century urban theme of the game, I settled on an aesthetic influenced by brutalism and Swiss minimalism, utilizing a strict grid and Neue Haas Grotesk as the only typeface in the book. The book itself was offered in two forms: a perfectbound softcover, and a limited-edition hardcover with a unique cover design. Both were printed on 70lb uncoated white paper by Mixam.

Fleur Du Mall, the first supplement and adventure for Libreté, was designed at the same time as the base game and offered to backers at a higher tier. It was printed, again by Mixam, as a 22pp saddle stitched zine on 80lb uncoated white paper.

This would prove to be GMDK’s last publication, as I disbanded the company in 2021 to focus on freelance work.
